home about dyslexia difficulties contact me about me i am a qualified specialist teacher, based in hertfordshire, with experience in teaching all ages and abilities. i am head of dyslexia in a local mainstream secondary school, where i have been employed for 11 years, to improve students’ literacy skills to ensure they achieve their full potential. i became interested in dyslexia as several of my students were struggling with reading and writing, often displaying bizarre attempts at the same word throughout the same piece of work. there seemed to be little information about this common difficulty from which many of our children suffer. advice was not easily accessible and appropriate help was not available. i decided to investigate the issues these students had so i could understand, help and offer suitable strategies. i have helped many students become proficient readers by teaching a variety of successful techniques to suit individual learning styles. this builds confidence and ensures progression so that every student succeeds. everyone deserves to achieve to the very best of their ability. with the right help, support and guidance, this is possible. what is dyslexia? dyslexia is a complex neurological condition, also known as a ‘specific learning difficulty’. the cause of dyslexia is still unknown, although we do know that it is about the way in which the brain is programmed. read more who is dyslexic? one in ten of the population are dyslexic. there is strong evidence to suggest that dyslexia is hereditary; affecting more boys than girls. the effects of dyslexia can range from mild to severe and can occur across a whole range of underlying abilities. read more how can specialist teaching help? after assessing students, difficulties are targeted and effective strategies taught, to ensure progression. this will include a variety of different learning styles tailored to the individual, depending on the age and ability of the learner. read more what are the characteristics of dyslexia? dyslexics may show difficulties with decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, sequencing, spelling, organisational skills, and processing information. they may also have a poor short-term and working memory. read more michelle has changed our sons' futures. she has stepped in where the schools failed and proved that with the right tutor you can achieve anything. we are truly grateful to have met her, she is amazing. louise michelle is fantastic, she not only shared her expertise with me but she also liaised with ollie's school so we were all singing from the same hymn sheet! since starting with michelle, ollie’s confidence has returned and he is doing far better at school than we could have ever hoped for! he now realises that he's not stupid, just that his brain works differently. michelle has given me sound advice and is highly competent and professional. she is very approachable and no question was ever too much. i would highly recommend her. julie i found michelle's teaching style very different to what i have been used to. the way that she was able to explain and give me strategies to work with things finally were able to fall into place. i wished i'd met michelle during my schooling as l would have done a lot better. we could do with more people like her to help children with their reading and writing to help them reach their full potential in life. ross michelle taught alfy for 18 months. she was very kind and understanding and his confidence improved resulting in him achieving higher grades! michelle michelle has been working with my son for nearly 3 months now to prepare him for his gcse english exams. although dyslexic, his confidence in english has grown enormously, and he looks forward to his lesson with michelle every week. she has helped him with many aspects of his work, including presentation skills, basic grammar and exam technique. every lesson is extremely well prepared and structured, and she has varied lessons when necessary to accommodate gcse coursework or exams. i would thoroughly recommend michelle, as her work on a one to one basis has been invaluable to jonathon. susan we were recommended to michelle, being told that she was a very good english tutor, who took time to understand your child and worked with them to ensure they reached their full potential. our son, jordan, started being tutored by michelle, last year, and we have seen a vast improvement in his english. our son now enjoys english and we are confident that he will achieve a higher grade in his exams this year. we would recommend michelle to other parents. we find her very approachable and she makes our child feel valued. julie and max michelle works with my 7 year old daughter. her expertise, enthusiasm, patience and general ability to help students who are struggling is outstanding. her lessons are always well organised and tailored for the student, using up to date strategies and learning styles. my daughter has learnt many new things and most importantly is becoming much more confident in her abilities. emma my daughter, holly, is 15 years old and has been seeing michelle since she was diagnosed with dyslexia. michelle has been fantastic with holly, reassuring her and boosting her self confidence in learning. holly loves learning with michelle. she is patient yet gets the job done. we have found such a difference in her since she has been tutored, both at home and school. holly is much more confident to do her exams because of her time with michelle. i would 200 percent recommend michelle and we are so thankful for all she has done for us. lisa m dyslexics will show difficulties with… phonological awareness this is a difficulty manipulating sounds within words and linking the idea of spoken word into text; either reading or writing. it is also a difficulty recognising rhyme, breaking up words into individual sounds and linking written letters with the sound they make. it is also an inability to recognise blends (individual letters blended together, for example: ‘cl’, ‘pr’, ‘spl’, ‘str’) and digraphs (letters put together that make one sound, for example: ‘ai’, ‘oa’, ‘sh’, ‘th’) and the inability to break up words into syllables. poor auditory short-term memory dyslexics typically struggle to retain any amount of information that has been delivered verbally; especially long lists. learning times tables and to tell the time may present a difficulty. processing and production speeds speed of thinking, processing information and producing answers quickly; whether verbally or written. they may have difficulties understanding what you say and following more complex instructions. lengthy exam questions can often be misinterpreted or simply not understood. poor co-ordination and fine motor skills dyslexics often have very poor handwriting. they may also show confusion between left and right. organisational and sequencing difficulties the typical brain is like a well organised library where information is neatly filed, any new information is automatically stored and information that needs retrieving is quickly accessible. someone with dyslexia will generally struggle with retrieving information quickly as their brain will lack an organised ‘filing system’. read more contact me please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like further information regarding tuition. myriad home 01.28.2016 call me today for more information on 07887 844612
